Male Infertility and Supplements

Male infertility can be caused by factors that affect mainly sperm quality (production, motility, morphology, oxidative stress) interfering to the final fertilization of the oocyte. About 2/3 of infertile men are diagnosed with problems in the production and quality of their sperm and 1/5 has concomitant health problems.

More specifically, common causes of persistent male infertility can be

  • Injuries, testicular torsion
  • Obstruction of the seminiferous tubules through which sperm pass during ejaculation
  • Recurrent inflammation of the testicles and prostate
  • Administration of medications toxic to the production of sperm
  • Alcohol and drug abuse
  • Varicocele
  • Various genetic abnormalities

 How is Male Infertility Diagnosed?

Getting a detailed medical history, performing a physical examination and analyzing sperm parameters constitute the triptych of the initial examination and assessment from the fertility specialist.

The basic sperm analysis is the most basic test for assessing male fertility, which examines sperm quality and motility. In addition, blood tests may be performed to check hormone levels that control sperm production. In some cases, you will be asked to have a urine test to examine whether or not there is semen in the urine, which can occur in cases of retrograde ejaculation. Finally, there are cases where your physician will recommend an ultrasound, MRI or testicular biopsy to check for sperm in preliminary forms.

Male Infertility and Dietary Supplements

It is scientifically proven that lifestyle choices have a large impact on male fertility and sperm quality. There are many ways to maintain the health and vitality of your sperm.

Antioxidants

Studies have shown that in many cases, male infertility can be due to the high levels of oxidative stress in the sperm. Oxidative stress is a condition in which harmful molecules called “free radicals” can cause damage to the genetic material of the sperm. Antioxidants are the body’s natural defense against oxidative stress. The administration of supplementary antioxidants can reduce oxidative stress levels, thus, assisting in the improvement of sperm quality.

Folic acid

Studies have also shown that supplements with nutrients, such as folic acid, can improve sperm count and possibly male fertility.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and L-Carnitine

Two nutrients – CoQ10 and L-Carnitine – that play a vital role in cellular energy production; several studies have shown that supplements with these nutrients can help improve sperm motility.

Vitamin D

Maintaining a normal vitamin D level has also been associated with improved mobility and sperm production.

You need to consult your fertility specialist in order to recommend the correct supplements and to adjust the doses according to your individual lifestyle and semen analysis results.
